Travesseiros are pillow-shaped puff pastries filled with almond cream. Queijadas de Sintra are small cheese tarts made with fresh cheese, sugar, and cinnamon. Both have been made in Sintra for centuries.
Where to eat
Piriquita is the most famous bakery, right in the town center. Get there early as lines form quickly. For a sit-down meal, the restaurants around the National Palace square serve good Portuguese food.
Colares wine region
The Colares wine region, between Sintra and the coast, produces some of Portugal's rarest wines from vineyards planted in sandy soil. A few wineries offer tastings.
