The four main palaces of Sintra
Sintra has four major palaces, each with a completely different character. Here is what makes each one special.
Pena Palace (Palacio da Pena)
The colorful hilltop palace is Sintra's most famous landmark. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it combines Romanticism with Moorish, Gothic, and Manueline styles. The panoramic views from the terraces are spectacular.
Quinta da Regaleira
The most atmospheric palace in Sintra. Known for its mysterious initiation well (a spiral staircase descending underground), grottos, and lush gardens. It feels like stepping into a Dan Brown novel.
National Palace (Palacio Nacional de Sintra)
The oldest palace in Sintra, right in the town center. Recognizable by its twin conical chimneys. The Moorish-influenced rooms and azulejo tiles are beautiful.
Monserrate Palace
The quietest and most romantic. Exotic gardens with plants from around the world. Fewer crowds than Pena or Regaleira.
