What is Quinta da Regaleira?

Built in the early 1900s by a wealthy Brazilian, Quinta da Regaleira is a Gothic Revival palace surrounded by elaborate gardens filled with Masonic, alchemical, and Templar symbols.

The Initiation Well

The highlight is the Initiation Well (Poco Iniciatico), a 27-meter spiral staircase that descends into the earth. The nine levels represent the nine circles of Hell (Dante) or Paradise. At the bottom, underground tunnels connect to other parts of the gardens.

Tips for visiting

  • Visit early to have the well almost to yourself
  • Wear good shoes, the gardens are hilly and sometimes slippery
  • Allow 1.5-2 hours minimum
  • The palace interior is interesting but the gardens are the real attraction
