History

Built by the Moors in the 8th-9th century, this hilltop fortification was conquered by Afonso Henriques in 1147. The walls snake along the mountain ridge, and you can walk the entire perimeter.

Getting there

The castle is a 10-minute walk from Pena Palace (downhill), or take bus 434 from Sintra station. It is often combined with Pena Palace on the same visit.
